Department of Mechanical Engineering

Program Overview

The Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest disciplines with a rich history of Engineers who have graduated across Polytechnics in Karnataka. Most of the graduates have either joined the industry after a Diploma or pursued higher education; either of the pathways has led them to become industry leaders. With the advent of technology, Mechanical Engineers are expected to be conversant with not just their discipline, but also other disciplines to be able to succeed in their careers. The Department of Technical Education has developed a new C20 curriculum in partnership with industry that enables students to become employees, engineering researchers or employers. The program provides broad-based and diverse engineering training in areas such as material science, solid and fluid mechanics, instrumentation and control, product and system design and manufacturing. You will also be trained for a variety of engineering roles, in industries ranging from Automotive, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Engineering design and development

Facilities/Labs

.

Lab1: Foundry and Forging Lab

Forging is the process of shaping metal into its finished shape by pressing or hitting it against an anvil or die. This lab is used for forging and foundry using many tools and equipment.

Major components in the lab are as follows.

Sl.No Name Quantity
1 Green sand -
2 Patterns 04
3 Rammers 10sets
4 Cope &Drag 15 sets
5 Anvil, M S Rod, Tongs. 06,10 sets

Lab2: Fluid Mechanics lab

The Fluid Mechanics laboratory is designed to examine the properties of fluids and to conduct experiments involving both incompressible and compressible flow.

Major components in the lab are as follows.

Sl.No Name Specification
1 G I Pipes, PVC Pipes 02,03
2 Turbine 01
3 Water -
4 Venturi meter, Orifice meter 01,01.
5 Pneumatic board 01

Lab3: Material Testing Lab

In this lab, we used to conduct Tension, Compression, Bending & Shear tests on UTM and evaluate material properties. To carry out Torsion, Hardness & Impact tests and determine various moduli, hardness numbers and impact energy.

Major components in the lab are as follows.

Sl.No Name Specification
1 UTM machine 01
2 Impact testing machine. 01
3 Dial Gauge 01

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)

  • Analyse, design and solve problems related to Mechanical Engineering and adapt to changes in technology by self-learning.
  • Work effectively as individuals and in a team, exhibiting leadership qualities to meet the goals of a project or the organization.
  • Work with professionalism and concern for the environment to meet societal needs.
  • Engage in higher learning leading to degrees or certifications.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES (POs)

  1. Basic and Discipline- specific knowledge :Apply knowledge of basic mathematics, science and engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to solve the engineering problems.
  2. Problem analysis :Identify and analyse well-defined engineering problems using codified standard methods.
  3. Design/ development of solutions :Design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assist with the design of systems components or processes to meet specified needs.
  4. Engineering Tools, Experimentation and Testing :Apply modern engineering tools and appropriate techniques to conduct standard tests and measurements.
  5. Engineering practices for society, sustainability and environment : Apply appropriate technology in the context of society, sustainability, environment and ethical practices.
  6. Project Management :Use engineering management principles individually, as a team member or as a leader to manage projects and effectively communicate about well-defined engineering activities.
  7. Life-long learning :Ability to analyse individual needs and engage in updating in the context of technological changes.
